fool’s gold

Let’s put our heads together
and I’ll braid your curly locks to mine
fine strands twisted
hand over hand
interwined like vines of ivy
clinging to the pillowcase
and I’ll trace the flecks in your iris
fools gold
speckled in a sky of blue
gather up your freckles and count how many new paint drops
you’ve missed
hidden behind your sun-kissed earlobes
and the dark warm grove
at the nape of your neck
I will drape you in velvet mist
and rub orange blossoms on your wrist
and we will twist our ankles
to the song of summer
fingers scraping the ceiling
echoes of pealing laughter lingering
long after you have gone
